Whitney Nyeholt, a 1st Grade Teacher in Hudsonville, MI, has been named the Open Up Resources Teacher of the Month for September 2024. Nyeholt is being recognized for her outstanding work in her classroom and ongoing support of teachers across the country as a member of the Open Up Resources National Professional Learning Community.
Nyeholt’s work with Bookworms K–5 Reading and Writing makes her one of the most innovative teachers in the country. The Bookworms K–5 Reading and Writing curriculum inspires a new way of teaching language arts by engaging students through compelling, real-world content to build equitable and inclusive learning opportunities.
Malyn Van Koevering, a colleague of Nyeholt, nominated her for her ability to instill confidence in all students to reach their goals. Van Koevering shared, “[Whitney] has a huge heart for students of all abilities, and she works hard to make sure every child she works with feels loved, safe, and cared for.”
Nyeholt described the Bookworms curriculum as a straightforward resource. She explained, “[Bookworms addresses the needs of] all kids with varying abilities with the DI piece!” Nyeholt went on to say, “I am able to pull out the curriculum and meet them where they are at. We can stretch out words together and they feel successful all year long.”
And she told us her favorite thing about adopting Bookworms K–5 Reading & Writing: “It is straight forward telling me what to teach with minimal prep. It is proven to help and scripted with little to no prep each day!”
