Event Details

Driving Discussion in K–8 Math with the Five Practices

Participants will dive into the 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions (Smith & Stein, 2018). They will learn about the roles of task selection and determining learning goals to prepare for mathematics discussions. Then, they will explore and engage in the five practices of anticipating, monitoring, selecting, sequencing, and connecting to prepare to facilitate productive mathematics discussions. Throughout the workshop, participants will consider the role that productive mathematics discussions play in creating an equitable mathematics learning experience for students.

*Sessions begin at 7:00pm ET. All event times are Eastern Time Zone.
**Tickets are non-refundable.

  • Session 1: Tasks, Learning Goals, and Anticipating (October 29)
Participants will consider what makes a task worth discussing and how to ensure that it is aligned to learning goals. They will anticipate student responses and consider the role that anticipating student responses plays in facilitating productive mathematics discussions.

  • Session 2: Monitoring with Assessing and Advancing Questions (November 12)
Participants will consider the practice of monitoring student responses as students engage with a task. They will learn about and develop assessing and advancing questions to best leverage student work time on a task.
  • Session 3: Selecting, Sequencing, and Connecting (November 19)
Students need to leverage the reading strategies they’ve already learned so they can focus on finding solutions to problems instead of abandoning comprehension and sense-making skills. As graphic organizers support reading and writing, bar models or tape diagrams support mathing. Together, we will explore the concrete-representational-abstract learning progression and its role in tackling word problems. Let’s solve problems together, modeling with cubes, drawing diagrams, and sharing anticipated strategies.

$75 per session or $149 to attend the virtual series!
