Professional Development

Our Approach to Professional Development

Comprehensive professional development (PD) is the most essential element of a successful curriculum adoption and implementation—our program is designed to elevate math practice, and success starts with supporting teachers with any necessary shifts. A central motivation for publishing our curriculum as OER is to finally give districts the ability to shift dollars toward meaningful, engaging PD that teachers will look forward to and learn from.

Open Up Resources offers ongoing professional development to school systems implementing its curricula. Our PD sessions fall along a continuum of services, meeting teachers where they are in the development of their professional practice; this scaffolded approach to professional learning establishes and builds on educators’ prior knowledge. We tailor professional learning and support recommendations to each district’s schedule, staffing, and delivery needs.

About Our Services

In addition to our curriculum-embedded professional learning, we offer:

  • On-site introduction to themes, routines, practices, and design of materials.
  • Workshops devoted to modeling and supporting practice change.
  • Facilitation of peer-supported work, activating PLCs to build district capacity.
  • Remote-based ‘phone an expert’ support, to give teachers real-time help when needed.

Our most popular offerings include:

  • Guiding principles for implementation: During this two-day professional development session, teachers will gain an overall understanding of the curriculum, assessments, and structure of the math program.
  • Unit-specific “launches”: A unit launch enables teachers to guide the implementation of the unit. Teachers will develop an understanding of the big ideas of the unit, prior student knowledge required, and key models and strategies for developing the type of conceptual understanding that leads students to fluency over time.
  • Focus on instructional practice: Our problem-based curriculum encourages mathematical communication in all forms, having been designed for a discourse-driven classroom. This is a shift in practice for many teachers. We support teachers in shifting their instruction by building their capacity while ensuring success leveraging our curriculum to improve student outcomes.
  • Training-of-trainers: Following a train-the-trainer model, district math leaders are taught how to coach math educators and provide in-house training. A full set of PD materials for each grade will be provided to support district math teams in enacting Unit Launches internally for any units not facilitated by Open Up Resources.
