Open Up Resources Announces Second Edition of Open Up Resources 6–8 Math, Including a Full Spanish Version of the Lauded Math Curriculum

2nd-Edition-Announcement-Blue-Pro-1-1600x837MENLO PARK, Calif., (January 28, 2019) — Open Up Resources today introduced the second edition of the Open Up Resources 6–8 Math curriculum, marking the most significant enhancements to the OER curriculum to date, including  a fully translated Spanish version.

These enhancements make it the first full-course OER math curriculum on the market that is formally translated into Spanish and standards-aligned.

Improving upon the top-rated EdReports.org review it's known for, the all-new edition features enhanced English Language Learner (ELL) supports within every lesson, updated student materials, updated teacher materials, and an improved user experience for both digital and print. These monumental improvements advance Open Up Resources' efforts to support every student in every classroom.

Already regarded as one of the most renowned math curricula on the market, the second edition Open Up Resources 6–8 Math curriculum builds on foundational principles for supporting language acquisition for all students. This is accomplished via enhanced discussion supports such as sentence frames that support the specific content and language functions of the lesson, a detailed disciplinary language progression for each unit, and language goals that are embedded within learning goals.

The second edition enhancements came out of needs that districts expressed to Open Up Resources; many ELL students simply don’t have the resources and supports they need to meet grade level standards in mathematics.

The announcement builds on the wild success of the first edition of Open Up Resources 6–8 Math. Beaumont Middle School in Lexington, KY implemented the curriculum in 2017. After just one year, they saw a 322% increase in ELL students reaching math proficiency from 6th to 7th grade according to the Kentucky Department of Education. The school also saw great gains in all sub-groups, including a 26% increase in proficiency for 7th grade students labeled as part of the achievement gap.

"These are the outcomes we strive to help every district achieve," said Jessica Reid Sliwerski, CEO of Open Up Resources. "As an education nonprofit, we don't need to profit off of students to optimize shareholder value. Our sole focus is on doing what is right by districts and students, so we reinvest our funds into endeavors that help kids. The second edition of Open Up Resources 6–8 Math is a massive step forward for education equity, and a perfect example of how we’re committed to helping all students and districts succeed."

The second edition will be available in August 2019 in both print and digital formats.  As a companion to these outstanding materials, Open Up Resources will offer tailored professional learning experiences to thoroughly support schools and districts implementing the curriculum.

Thousands of schools and districts have been using and evaluating Open Up Resources’ first three offerings: Open Up Resources 6–8 Math, EL Education K–5 Language Arts, and Bookworms K–5 Reading and Writing. The organization directly supported more than 400,000 students in 2018, and is striving to support over 1 Million in 2019. Wake County Public School System (NC), the 15th-largest district in the US, has implemented two Open Up Resources curricula: Open Up Resources 6–8 Math and EL Education K–5 Language Arts.
