The Collaborative Curriculum

How expert authors used classroom feedback to forge Illustrative Mathematics 6–8 Math

When we describe the development process for our freely-licensed curricula, we hear glowing feedback about the interplay between these steps: “We tap expert authors” and “Our curricula are refined through classroom experience.”

This powerful combination–materials authored by experts then forged in classrooms–is our key to bringing exceptional materials to K–12.

About the Expert Authors

Illustrative Mathematics 6–8 Math was developed by Illustrative Mathematics, a nonprofit founded by noted mathematician and standards author Bill McCallum. The Illustrative Mathematics team has extensive experience with materials development, based on years of providing free resources to the K-12 community. The Role of Teachers

During the 2016–17 school year, 175 teachers across six school districts helped fine-tune the curriculum as part of a yearlong beta release. Daily teacher feedback was used by the Illustrative Mathematics authoring team in the continuous improvement of the materials. Read about the beta release, and  learn what our beta participants had to say about their experience with the program.

This collaborative development process spawned a curriculum that now garners high praise from educators.
